Overview

ACT-ivate was born during a 48-hour hackathon challenge to design technology that empowers social change. Our two-person team conceptualized and prototyped a mobile app that connects activists, organizers, and everyday users to live social movements in real time.

Through an interactive live map, users could locate nearby protests, non-profit events, and community actions — or stream live perspectives from those on the ground. The goal: turn passive awareness into active participation.

The Challenge

Activism often spreads faster online than it does on the streets. Many want to join movements but struggle to find credible, up-to-date information on where to show up or how to help.

Our challenge was to bridge digital advocacy and physical action — creating a tool that encourages connection, trust, and safety within activist networks.

The Solution: ACT-ivate App

We designed a mobile platform with three core pillars:

1. Live Map of Action
   • Users can explore a map showing verified protests, marches, and volunteer events happening near them.
   • Events are color-coded by type (e.g., climate, justice, education) and show live participation counts.
2. Watch & Witness
   • Live video integration allows activists to broadcast verified streams directly from protest sites.
   • Viewers can engage through reactions or quick-donate links to on-site organizations.
3. Community & Connection
   • In-app chat threads and safety check-ins foster accountability and connection.
   • Non-profits can register to host campaigns or fundraisers directly through the map.
